WOYWW # 215

YEAH!!!! It's another week of a meeting of crafty minds over at Julia's place. Another week of visiting very talented, very inspirational woman. Fun tidbit...This is my 100th post!!! And I broke 10,000 visits today. WOO HOO!!! Now if only there were enough hours in a day to visit every single desk. I want to thank everyone who stopped by my desk, and took time to comment, each and everyone makes me smile. :D

So this week I have been working on my paper bead stock. I made various paper beads, I even tried my hand at saucer beads. They are really cool looking. I also made some beads out of tissue paper. I actually love paper beads, but boy are they time consuming. Tracing them out, cutting them, rolling them. My favorite are my tissue paper beads, but they are very messy to make. Tissue paper and glue… not a great combo. But here are a few:

My Scrap pile
I take little leftover pieces and twist them into tight little ropes

The final beads

Here I combined 2 pieces for a different look
I take long strips and start wrapping them around a toothpick adding glue as I go, forming them into balls, I then add the tissue ropes around the balls using lots of glue to adhere them. They sure are pretty, but a messy pain to make.

I also made lots of paper beads. I took all the thin scraps left over paper after cutting out the strips for the beads and decided to glue them to a piece of paper with gel medium, and I am using it for collage, I cut out some flowers and a heart. You can see them on my doodled page in my graph paper Moleskine. I love this Moleskine for practicing doodles and Zentagles*.
To the right are the bead strips, the middle are scraps, and then my new collage sheet

Flowers & a Heart for collage

My Doodle page, to the right is my box of pens and pencils

Well I hope you enjoyed your visit. I know you all have lots of desks to visit, but I have one last thing to leave you with. A poem I wrote, I hope you like it. And if you haven't linked here from WOYWW, please click here, and join in on the fun. (((HUGS))))

                                                   THE ARTIST WITHIN
As I sit and try
to find the artist within,
I have no idea
where to start or how to begin,
As I ponder on how I am to be,
I feel at a loss
For this doesn't feel like me,
My desire to create, draw, and paint
is more powerful than one can believe,
I am working hard
tearing down walls,
Digging deep for the emotion to create,
As I sit and try
to find the Artist deep within,
Raw,naked, ready to go
to start, and to begin,
No longer left to ponder,
Who is this artist within.    -Kim Hogan

  1. Lovely paper beads! I have made the normal ones like you have at the bottom, but the saucer ones are fab... will have to figure out how you make those! Annette #8

  2. I love your tissue beads and your saucer beads. They are truly incredible. I've made lots of paper beads, but never either of those. The do sort of look messy, but messy can be fun, too. And I love what you did with the scraps. Your collage is amazing.

  24. Hi Kim, you must have a lot of patience to make those paper beads ... however, the effort is worth it, they are lovely. And how talented are you, writing poetry too ... I've never been able to master the art though I wish I could. Hope you have an enjoyable day. Elizabeth x #47

  30. Kimberly, to answer your questions--when I made the paper beads with embossing powder, I made the rolled type like in your last picture. Then I rolled the bead around on the embossing ink pad--I used VersaMark, but any clear embossing ink would be fine. Next I rolled them in embossing powder--I used clear UTEE first, but there really isn't any reason why you couldn't use any type of clear embossing powder. Then I put them back on the bamboo skewer to melt the powder, so the holes wouldn't get blocked. Afterwards, I added some spots of metallic embossing powders, too. It's a neat effect, and really easy. Some of them actually ended up looking like blown glass.

  33. Thanks for popping by. Hard boiled sweets are called hard candy in America. They are made by boiling flavoured sugar until molten, then cooled and cut into drops or rounds. It looks like a messy business but I'm keen to give them a go! Your beads look great. An inspired choice to decorate them with tissue strands too. I enjoyed the poem. Hope to see you around again! 35. Your paper beads are amazing. I've always been put off by the normal ones because I'm not mad on the shape or how they look, but I've never seen beads like yours before! The tissue ones look really organic, and I love the saucer ones. So different. When I see what you do with narrow strips of scrap paper, it makes me ashamed to think of how many I've thrown away thinking they were no use! Beautiful.

  42. Hi, Kimberley, back again! You may well get your heart's desire to go on a mission trip one of these days - Father God will let you know when the time is right. My own girls started going when they were in their teens - boy, what an anxious time for Mum here, as they sped off around the globe! But, yes, what an experience!
Thanks for your visit and comments - the big shot isn't mine - it belongs to Mrs D, she just loaned it to me. I can't afford one, either.

  44. Thanks for your nice reply, Kim, and for the info about making up the scraps into a project. Such a great idea! We were over at the new house again today and some more progress has been made - not so much on my ARTHaven but lots in the kitchen! It's all very exciting, and I'm enjoying the whole process.
